Our History Simon Spalding was born and raised in San Francisco. For over 30 years, Simon has performed music in the American, European, and Asian traditions. Simon studied Ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley. He has performed sailor songs and traditional dance music throughout North America and Europe as a solo act and with a variety of folk and traditional music ensembles. His venues include festivals, museums, folk clubs, live theater, Renaissance fairs, films, recordings, and the decks of sailing vessels at sea. Simon's primary instrument is the fiddle, but he performs with a stable of about 50 stringed instruments from around the world. Simon's Solo & Other Recordings Sara Kirtland Spalding grew up in upstate New York and Austin, Texas. She studied voice at the Austin Chamber Music Center and at UT Austin, where she was a member of various early music groups. Sara has performed traditional music, art song, and oratorio in classical concert series, churches, educational programs, Renaissance lairs, and other special events for over 10 years. Simon and Sara met in 1997 at Cavalier Dayes of Texas, a central Texas festival set in the year 1633. They now live and work in New Bern, a picturesque town that was North Carolina’s last colonial capital and the 1898 birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. They are both music educators and church choir directors. Simon and Sara have two children, two cats, and a mortgage. Tuppence is an acoustic duo performing traditional music of the British Isles, North America, and beyond. Simon and Sara perform historical ballads, lively fiddle tunes, sea chanteys, contemporary folk songs, and Ragtime from the 1890’s. Simon plays violin, mandolin, banjo, and many other stringed instruments. Sara sings and plays piano, guitar, recorder, and bodhran (Irish drum).
